「フォレンジック」とは元々、犯罪捜査や法医学の文脈で使用される科学的な鑑識や調査を指す表現でした。しかし現在では、IT業界の言葉としても使われるようになり、コンピュータや記録媒体に格納された法的証拠の分析や検証の技術や手段を表現するために使われています。広範な意味での「法医」から分けて表現する時には、「デジタルフォレンジック」という名称も使われます。日本の警察では「フォレンジック」を、「犯罪を立証するための電磁的記録の解析技術及びその運用方法」と定義しています。
