「bogon」は、本義的に存在しないことが想定されるIPアドレスやパケット、そしてその類の経路を指す言葉として用いられます。この名称は、BBCのSFラジオドラマであるThe Hitchhiker’sGuide to the Galaxyから生まれたとされています。RFC3871は、大規模ISPのセキュリティ運用基準を設定し、それにおいて「bogon」は、「IANAや地域インターネットレジストリ（RIR）等から与えられていない、もしくは特別な目的で与えられていないIPアドレスを有するパケット」として解釈されています。
