「サステナビリティ経営」とは、環境、社会、経済の長期的な維持可能性、すなわち「サステナビリティ」を意識したビジネス運営を指します。「サステナビリティ」は、自然界や人類社会が長期間にわたり適切に働き、好ましい状態を保つための概念を原点に持ちます。2015年からは、持続可能な開発目標（SDGs）の打ち出し、パリ協定の採用、および年金積立金管理運用独立行政法人（GPIF）による環境・社会・ガバナンス（ESG）指標の選定といった動きにより、環境や社会的問題を取り巻く国際的な枠組みや規範が強化されてきました。
