「数値制御」を意味するNC（numerical control）は、溶断機のトーチの動きや切断酸素のON/OFFが数値で表現された加工データを指し、これを「NCデータ」と言います。この「NCデータ」は、しばしばシンプルに「NC」と言い換えて表現されます。これらの命令は、一種の暗号のような形で存在しており、溶断機の精密な動きを制御します。
