キルド鋼とは、アルミニウムなどの添加により酸素を除去し鋳造した鋼材を指します。酸素がしっかりと排除されることで、鋼はガス放出を伴わず静かに固化し、「キルド（killed）」鋼と名付けられました。このガス放出が起きない性質から、気泡が存在せず、材質が均一かつ強度が高くなります。そのため、リムド鋼という酸素を脱酸していないタイプよりも上質で、高級鋼や合金鋼の製造によく活用されます。
