取引の対象となる商品が特定の国や地域で生産、製造、あるいは加工されたことを証明する証書が「原産地証明書」です。
その使い道としては、その商品の輸入時に、通常より低く設定された特恵関税やFTAなど、あるいは高く設定された報復関税やアンチダンピング税を適用するために使用します。この他にも、特定の国からの輸入品に対する禁止や制限が必要とされるケース（中東の国々がイスラエルに対するボイコットなど）でも利用します。
