“トレース”とは、溶断機（トレーサー）が赤外線カメラを使って原寸大の型紙を読み込み、その形状に沿って切断を行うトーチの動作を指します。型紙の黒線の中央をたどる動作を「ラインのトレース」、また、黒と白の間の境界線をたどる動作を「エッジのトレース」と呼びます。ただし、型紙を直接トレースすると、最終的な製品の大きさが炎の直径分だけ小さくなるため、その点を念頭におく必要があります。
