フラグル攻撃は、DDoS攻撃の一種であり、smurf攻撃の派生形だと言えます。攻撃者は、自身が送信者と偽り大規模ネットワークのブロードキャストアドレスへUDPパケットを送り込みます。これにより、UDPトラフィックを受信したネットワーク上のコンピュータが大量のトラフィックを送り返し、結果として狙い打ちされたコンピュータは機能を停止します。一方で、smurf攻撃という攻撃手法では、UDPパケットではなく、ICMPのエコーリクエストを多量に生成し、それによって目標へのDDoS攻撃を引き起こします。
