例：「ユーザーモード（User Mode）は、あるアプリケーションが運用開始される際に、OSから与えられる特殊な権利といえます。このユーザーモード状態では、アプリケーションが触れる範囲は、一定の枠内に限定されます。アプリケーションがWindows上で作動するとき、それに伴い仮想メモリ上には新たなプロセスが生み出されます。そしてこのプロセスは、アプリケーション専用の領域となり、カーネル空間といった極めて重要な領域には触れることが許されません。しかし、マルウェアはこれらの制約を逆手に取り、OSの根幹をなす機能を悪用し、カーネルモードへと進入することでシステムを脅かします。」
