「ApplicationServer」の短縮形であるAPサーバは、Webサーバーによって受け取られたリクエストの処理を、JavaやPHP、Rubyといったプログラミング言語により実行する役割を担っています。Webサーバー、アプリケーションサーバー、データベースサーバーの3つが一体となって構成されるWebシステムの一部であり、その中核となるのがAPサーバーです。具体的な動作としては、Webサーバーからのリクエストを受け、それを元にプログラムを走らせて動的なコンテンツを生成し、それをWebサーバーへと送り返します。
