「TrickBot」とは、トロイの木馬型を採用したマルウェアで、その主な侵入経路はフィッシング攻撃やスピアフィッシング攻撃です。実際に、利用者がメール内の添付ファイルやリンクを開くと、C2サーバへの接続が行われ、その結果としてTrickBotがインストールされます。TrickBotは情報窃取などの機能を持ち、その出現が確認された2016年当初には、WizardSpiderグループが欧米の金融機関への攻撃に活用していました。2020年に至ると、アメリカ政府とMicrosoft社による合同作戦で、TrickBotの運営者が管理していたC2サーバがテイクダウンされました。
