ウェハ段階（チップがウェハから切り離される前）で、半導体デバイスの電子テストを実施する作業を指します。この名称は、チップのボンディングパッドと電気的に接続するために金属探針（プローブ）を用いることから来ています。ボンディングパッドに電気的な接点を確立し、欠陥チップにマークをつけて、それが後続の工程に進行しないように管理します。
