有価証券とは、株券や債券、国際・投資信託、そして社債の受益権を指す言葉です。ここで注意する点は、約定日と受け渡し日は異なるものの、通常の会計の取り扱いは約定日を基準に行われるということです。その価格は、有価証券が取引された際の時価で決まります。有価証券を保有する目的は大きく4つに分けられます：売買を目的とした有価証券、満期まで保有する債券、子会社や関連会社の株式、そしてその他の有価証券となります。
