「ウイルス」は、一般的にコンピュータウイルスと呼ばれ、その機能を障害する特定のソフトウェア指し示します。この生命体に感染し、健康を侵害する本物のウイルスのように、意図的に不適切な動作を引き起こすためにプログラムされており、その結果としてコンピュータに被害を与えるため、「ウイルス」という名称が付けられました。コンピュータウイルスとほぼ同義で使われる言葉に「マルウェア」があります。「マルウェア」はmalicious softwareを省略した形で、「悪意を持ったソフトウェア」を指します。これは、特定の問題を引き起こすために意図的に作成されたソフトウェアを指し、その意味ではコンピュータウイルスとマルウェアは同一視すべきです。
