“LPWA”とは、”Low Power Wide Area”を略したもので、長距離に渡る通信が低いエネルギーで可能な無線通信技術の総称または方法を指します。これは主にIoTデバイスの通信方法として利用されます。IoTでは、消費エネルギーが少なく遠距離でセンサーデータを送受信可能な通信標準が求められています。低エネルギー使用により、多くのIoTデバイスの電池を交換する手間が軽減できますし、遠距離通信が可能であれば、データ受信機の数も削減できます。このようにして、IoT環境を低コストで運用するためにはLPWAの利用が不可欠と言われています。
