「シャーシ方式」は、荷物の積み込みや荷下ろし、入庫・出庫などの作業をシャーシ上のコンテナと一緒に行うやり方を指します。フランス語起源の「シャーシ」という言葉は、我々の解釈ではトレーラの荷台部分を意味します。主に海上コンテナ専用のトレーラのことをさします。さらに、「シャーシ輸送」とは、トレーラヘッド（トラクタ）から荷台を分離して移動させる方法を言います。
