CAPTCHAは、完全自動公開型チューリングテスト（Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart）という長いうちはその命名の由来です。このCAPTCHAは、ユーザーが人間なのか機械なのかを判別する認証手段で、単純なテストを採用してその確認を行います。具体的には、文字が書かれた画像を見て入力するといった方法や、不規則な画像の中から何か特定のものを選び出すといった認証方法が一般的です。これらのテストはコンピュータには難解であり、そのためスパムや自動化された攻撃から保護する効果があるとされています。
