「CVE」は、その正式な呼称が「Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures」で、日本では「共通脆弱性識別子」と訳されています。公に利用可能な情報セキュリティの脆弱性（欠陥）をデータベースにまとめ、各々に一意の名称やID番号を割り当てている訳です。このCVEを利用することで、特定の脆弱性について情報を共有する際、共通のIDを参照できるようになります。

さらに、この脆弱性を特定し、一般の人々が閲覧や共有できるような体制を作り出しているのが、アメリカの非営利組織あるMITRE Corporationです。彼らの活動はアメリカ政府の支援を得て行われており、情報セキュリティ分野でグローバルな標準として役立っています。
