揮発性メモリの一部であり、メモリ保持のための連続的な書き込みと読み出しが求められるメモリ機能です。メモリセルは一つのトランジスタとキャパシタ（コンデンサ）によって成り立ち、情報保存はキャパシタに蓄積された電荷の存在、または非存在により実行されます。しかしながら、この電荷はリーク（漏れ）電流の影響で時間経過と共に失われてしまうため、定期的な情報の読み出しと再書き込み（リフレッシュ動作）が必要です。電源が切断されると、保存された情報は全て消えてしまいます。その汎用性から、このタイプのメモリは幅広く活用されています。
