『安全在庫』とは、顧客サービスの提供に際し、所謂「需要の不確実性」を虎の巻として、供給できなくなる状況（品切れや欠品など）を避けるべく設ける在庫のことを指します。JIS規格では、“安全在庫：需要変動または補充期間の不確実性を吸収するために必要とされる在庫”と定義されており、要は需要の動向に備えて欠品を避けるために立案される在庫のことです。ただし、欠品を許さぬあまり安全策を重視しすぎると、在庫が過剰になるリスクも存在するため、運用にあたってはそのバランスに注意が求められます。
