パルス符号変調は、パルス変調の一種であり、音声信号やその他の波形振幅（アナログ値）をサンプル化と量子化を行うことでデジタル表現（パルス列）へと変換する。それぞれのサンプル値は、２進数で表現される。この基本的な形に加えて、サンプール値間の差分に注目し波形を表現するADPCM（適応型差分パルス符号変調）という命名された拡張形も存在している。
