ファブレス経営は、自身の工場を持たず、自社で企画・開発した製品の製造を外部に委託する経営スタイルを指します。この手法は、1980年代にアメリカのシリコンバレーの半導体業界で生まれ、現在ではゲーム、測量機器、食品、インテリア、衣料などさまざまな業界で取り入れられています。
特に、製品のライフサイクルが短期間である半導体のような業界では、大型の設備投資を行った工場が、その投資を回収する前に製品改良のための改装を必要とするという経営上のリスクが存在しています。’
