FIPSはFederal Information Processing Standardsの頭文字を取ったもので、米国国立標準技術研究所（NIST）が連邦情報セキュリティマネジメント法（FISMA）を基に設定した、コンピュータシステムに関する基準と指針です。元々は米国の連邦政府機関を対象に作られ、米商務省の認可を得ていますが、現在では民間企業も自発的に採用しています。この基準はセキュリティ対策の詳細を幅広い領域に渡り細分化し、その一部は連邦政府機関に対して強制的に適用されています。
