UPXは手頃で開かれたソースの実行可能ファイルのパッカーで、これによりファイルサイズが圧縮され、軽減化することができます。この圧縮されたファイルは、ランタイム等の追加要素やメモリの過剰消費なしに、自己解凍の可能性を提供します。特にWindowsの実行可能ファイル（PE、EXE）や、DLLだけでなく、macOSアプリケーションやLinuxの実行可能ファイル（ELF）に対するサポートも行っています。
実行可能なファイルをパッキングすると、ファイルシグネチャが変わるため、これがサイバーアタックやマルウェアによる防御を避ける手段として、UPXのようなパッカーが利用されることが多くみられます。’
