「リベラルアーツ」は、「人を自由にする学問」を意味し、そのルーツはギリシャ・ローマ時代にまで遡ります。自由へと導く7つの学問の領域、すなわち、文法学、修辞学、論理学、算術、幾何学、天文学、音楽といった領域から構成されます。「人が有するべき実践的な知識・学問の根底」を形成するものとして、今日の大学教育の中ではその理念がどこでも見受けられます。
