ICの開発段階において、機能設計を基盤として具体的な論理回路を構築する作業を指します。EDAツールなどを多様して実施される自動論理設計では、HDL（ハードウェア記述言語）やRTL（レジスタ転送レベル）といった、機能設計により得られた記述が用いられ、それを基にゲートレベルの論理回路が設計されます。また、このような論理システムを論理回路へと変換するプロセスは論理合成とも称されます。
