コンプライアンスとは、法令や社会的規範、倫理を尊重する行動の取り組みであり、これが今まで以上に注目されています。多くの企業は、そのためのガイドラインを策定し、内部統制システムを構築することに努めています。
企業義務として、社会的に認められた行動の取り組みが要求されます。これには、異なる視点で評価したうえで、設定した行動指標を遵守することが含まれます。コンプライアンス違反とは、この基準に反する行為で、違反企業は損害賠償訴訟（取締役の責任については株主代表訴訟）などの法的責任と共に、信用落ちによる売上減少などの社会的責任を負うこととなります。
英語での表現は”Compliance”となります。
