2017年、ロシアがウクライナへ向けたサイバー攻撃の道具として用いられたマルウェア、「NotPetya（ノットペトヤ、ノットペチャ）」は、名前の由来からも分かるように、Petyaというランサムウェアの一種とKasperskyにより命名されました。このNotPetyaは、標的のコンピュータに侵入すると、ハードドライブ内の全てのファイルを暗号化し、使用者に身代金の要求を表示します。しかしながら、一見すると通常のランサムウェアのように見受けられますが、これが実際にはワイパーであり、身代金を支払ったとしても暗号化されたファイルの復元は不可能であるという特徴があります。
