表面実装技術とは、電子部品やICを基板表面に取り付けることに関する特殊な技術のことを言います。部品のリード（端子）を直接基板に挿入することはありません。この技術は、電子機器が小さく、軽く、薄くなる傾向を受け、さらなる発展を続けています。そして、この技術に対応する部品は、表面実装部品とも呼ばれ、またSMD（Surface Mount Device）という名前でも知られています。
