「食刻」とも呼ばれるエッチングは、物体の摩耗を引き起こす化学反応の一つです。これは主にICやプリント配線基板などの精密な作業に活用されます。一般的に、光露光技術であるフォトリソグラフィを用いてレジストパターンをマスクとして作成し、その下にある薄膜をエッチングしてパターンを形成します。利用する手法によって「ウェットエッチング」（薬液を用いる）と「ドライエッチング」（プラズマやイオンを利用する）とに分けられます。
