欧州では、MST（MicroSystemTechnology）という名で親しまれている、微細な加工技術を駆使して作成される微小機械システムのことを指します。この技術はシリコンプロセスによって洗練され、可動部まで含む高度な精密加工が可能となっています。さらに、電子回路を組み込むことも可能で、圧力センサーや光通信部品、医療やバイオチップなど、様々な分野での応用が見込まれています。また、現在ではマイクロレベルの技術からさらに加工精度を高めたNEMS（NanoElectro-MechanicalSystem）の開発にも取り組んでいます。
