「免疫」は生体が持つ自己防衛のシステムであり、それを利用して先手を打つのがワクチンの役割です。感染症への「免疫力」を生体自体に生成させることで、未然に予防することを可能にします。具体的には、病原体であるウイルスや細菌、毒素の毒性を弱めたり、消したりしたものを接種します。これにより、実際に病原体が体内に侵入（感染）しても、発病することなく免疫による防衛反応が働きます。ワクチンは大きく分けて、病原体の感染自体を防御するもの（例：日本脳炎や肺炎双球菌のワクチン）、発病を予防するまたは症状を軽減するもの（例：麻疹、水痘、風疹ワクチン）の2つがあります。また、ワクチンはその種類に応じて3つのグループに大別されます。
