人々や動物の皮膚や粘膜に常在する細菌の一つで、毒素を生成し食中毒を引き起こす能力を持つ。「黄色ブドウ球菌」という名前がついた理由は、顕微鏡下で観察するとブドウの房のように細菌のクラスターが見られ、また、培養されると黄色いコロニーを形成する特性から来ています。
