「メラビアンの法則」というのは、人間相互の交流に際して、言葉だけではなく、視覚的や聴覚的要素がどれだけ印象に影響を及ぼすかを示した原則で、アメリカの心理学者A・メラビアンにより名付けられ、広範に通信の根底として応用されています。

一般的に、言葉で考えや感情を伝達する（バーバル・コミュニケーション）ことがコミュニケーションのカギであると誤って受け取られがちです。しかし、現実には、口調や声量といった聴覚的側面（聴覚情報）と、表情やジェスチャーなど視覚的側面（視覚情報）による非言語的な交流手段（ノンバーバル・コミュニケーション）が主導的な役割を果たしています。
