SDNは「Software Defined Network」の略式でエスディーエヌと呼ばれ、これはネットワークを仮想化する際の独特の概念で、基本的にネットワークをソフトウェアで構築することを差します。

通常、PC、サーバー、ストレージ等を連携させるネットワークの制御は、ルーターやスイッチ等のネットワーク機器を利用します。しかしながら、システムの構造の変更が要されたり、ネットワーク機器が故障したりした時、個々のネットワーク機器の設定を再度行う必要が生じ、時間と手間が掛かります。
