「Sustainability Transformation」から頭文字を取り、「ST」と呼ばれるこの概念は、2020年8月に経済産業省が公表した「企業価値を維持・向上させるためのサステナブルな方向性についての議論」の中間報告書で定義されています。不確定性の高まる現代のビジネス環境において、企業のサステナビリティ（企業が持続的に収益を上げ、成長を継続する能力）と社会のサステナビリティ（社会全体が持続的に発展し、繁栄を続ける能力）が重要視される経営スタイルを指します。
「企業のサステナビリティ」については、企業の強みや競争力、あるいはビジネスモデルなどの要素が含まれるものとして理解されています。
