合併というのは、複数の企業が法的な意味で一体化するプロセスを指す。M&Aの一環として最も強力な手法ではあるが、実際のところ第三者間で直接合併が行われるケースは稀である。多くの場合、まずは株式の譲渡が行われ、企業が購入者の完全子会社になった上で、機会を見計らって合併が進められる。M&Aとは”Mergers and Acquisitions”（合併と買収）の頭文字を取ったもの。合併には吸収合併と新設合併の2つの種類が存在する。
