「セグメント」は、特に鉄鋼業界においては「シールドセグメント」を指すことが主流です。これはシールド工法というトンネル作成技術に使用され、トンネルの外壁部分を形成するブロックを指します。シールド工法とは、筒型の専用機械を使って地中を確実に掘り進める手法で、作業中に土壁が崩落するのを防ぐための工夫が施されています。シールドセグメントは鉄筋コンクリート製のRCセグメントと鋼材によって構成されるスチールセグメントという二種類に大別されます。
