「製品開発プロセスの中で、異なる企業が原料の確保、技術開発、製造といった異なる段階をそれぞれ管理するビジネスモデルを指し、その反対概念は『垂直統合』とされる。この「水平分業」の強みは、設備投資の負荷を緩和し、主要なスキルや知識に対する投資を増やすことが可能になる点にある。特に、莫大な投資が求められる半導体製造業界においては、このモデルが非常にうまく適応し、GPU製造のリーダーであるNVIDIAやモバイルチップの大手、Qualcommなどが採用している。これらの企業はいわゆる「ファブレス」企業で、製造部門を持たず、その業務は製造を専門とする企業（ファウンドリ）に外部委託している。」
