「切り株」や「半券」の意味がある「スタブ」は、IT業界では特異な用途をもっています。それはソフトウェアのテストフェーズで登場する、一種の代役モジュールのことを指すのです。具体的には、テスト対象のモジュールが他の下位モジュールを呼び出す場合、その下位モジュールが未完成であったりするときにスタブが用いられます。

スタブはオリジナルのモジュールと同じ名前、引数、戻り値の形を持つため、上位モジュールからはまったく同じコードで呼び出すことが可能です。スタブの仕事は、予想される戻り値を一定値として自動で返すという単純なものであり、テストを円滑に進行させるための重要な役割を果たします。
