調質とは

「調質」は熱処理手法の一つで、鋼の状態を最適化するプロセスをさします。その一環として、「焼入れ」という方法が存在します。これは、鋼材を高温に加熱し、その後急速に冷却することで硬度を増加させる工程を指すものです。しかし、この仕組みだけでは鋼材は硬くなるものの、同時に脆さも増します。

そこで、よりよい特性を引き出すための「焼戻し」が行われます。これは、焼入れ後に脆くなった鋼材を再び加熱し、組織を安定させ、材料の本来の特性を活かすことで鋼の引張り強度や耐力、伸びといった機械的性質を強化する熱処理手法です。これにより硬さを保ちつつも、粘り強い鋼材を製作することが可能となります。

この一連の工程、「焼入れ」と「焼戻し」を通じて鋼の状態を最適化する熱処理全体のことが、「調質」と呼ばれています。「調質硬度」は、調質によりどれだけ鋼材を硬くするかを数値で示したものです。
