「鉛フリー」とも表現されることのあるこの新技術は、過去には常に錫と鉛の合金（Sn-Pb）がはんだとして活躍してきました。その理由として、大量生産や信頼性が挙げられます。しかし、その一方で鉛は人体や環境に対する影響が問題視され、その影響を抑制するために、新たなはんだ合金が開発されているのが現状です。その代表的なものとして、錫と銀と銅の合金（Sn-Ag-Cu）、錫と銀とインジウムとビスマスの合金（Sn-Ag-In-Bi）、錫と銅とニッケルの合金（Sn-Cu-Ni）、錫と亜鉛とビスマスの合金（Sn-Zn-Bi）があります。これらの中でも特に用途が広がっているのがSn-Ag-Cuで、多くの基板実装に使用されています。
