ノロウイルスは人間の体内、特に腸内で繁殖し、人から人への直接的な感染の他にも、ウイルスに汚染された糞便を介した食品摂取による食中毒も引き起こします。我が国で発生する食中毒のケースの中でも、このノロウイルスによるものが発生件数・患者数ともに最も高いと言われています。特に冬季に発生が多いですが、四季問わず一年通じて胃腸炎を引き起こす能力を持っています。
