モジュール化とは、すでに存在する製造設備で作られた高い互換性を持つモジュール製品群を基にして、新しい製品を設計する手法を指します。顧客の要求に応じて、このモジュール製品群から適切な部品を選択し、その製品の設計を進めるわけです。こうしたモジュール化の取り組みにより、「製品のバリエーション拡大」と「製造リソースの最適化」の兩つの見かけ上対立する目標が共存可能になります。伝統的な設計手法と比べると、一部品ごとの大量生産が可能となり、製品は顧客の多様なニーズに対応する形でカスタマイズできるようになります。
