高電子移動度トランジスタはガリウム砒素（GaAs）等の化合物半導体を用い、その異なる2種の半導体材料を結合（ヘテロ接合）し作られます。その際、接合部分の性質を活用し、電子が高速で移動することが可能です。これはシリコン（Si）の半導体と比べて、驚異的な速度で動作する超高速トランジスタです。そのため、主に衛星放送の受信機や携帯電話などの高周波を増幅する素子に用いられています。’
