ハードウェア記述言語（HDL）として認知されている一つがVerilogであり、VHDLと同様に数多くのIC製造会社で使用しています。C言語との類似点が多いため、言語の習得がさほど難しくないといえるでしょう。さらに、VerilogはVHDLよりもコードがシンプルであり、結果として記述要素の量を抑えられるという特長を持っています。この言語は、1995年にIEEE1364として公式に標準化されました。
