レガシーシステムとは、古い技術を用いて構築された情報システムやコンピュータシステムのことを指します。ここでの「レガシー」は「遺産」を意味し、それ故に「レガシーデバイス」や「レガシーOS」といった言葉も存在します。

このシステムは、通常、企業の基幹業務を支えるメインフレーム（汎用機）を利用して構築されています。メインフレームの特徴として、独自のOSを搭載したり、信頼性が高い、堅牢な構造を持っている点が挙げられます。その強靱さから、現在も一部の金融機関などで、ミッションがクリティカルとされる業務で使用されています。
