システム全体を役割ごとに細分化したそれぞれのコンポーネントを指す。サブシステムと呼ばれ、それ自体が全体システムの一部でありながら、独立したシステムとしても機能する。これは日本独自の表現方式である。
たとえば、企業の基幹システムにおいては、会計、給与計算、顧客データベース、在庫管理などが各々独立したサブシステムとして存在する。
